Observations in the Studio (NaPoWriMo #29)

image

A child’s messy room with life-sized dolls sprawled and toys scattered on the floor.
Hands poke through the air pockets of a jacket and an imaginary T-rex claws its way around the room.

Rise and fall of chests in deep breathing
Laughter and hushed whispers and silence
Sweat and glue from stinky shoes
Bitter liquid adrenaline of coffee
Warm fuzziness of oversized sweaters

Beating of a heart through pulsing veins underneath guitar blasts muffled by earphones.

Emma announcing a trip to Canada’s Wonderland.

Therabands, chiffon skirts, and athletic tape arranged neatly beside bags and water bottles.
Sweatpants, long satin ribbons, and snack wrappers thrown carelessly into a tangled pile.

Reviewing choreography to go from “Ahhhh!” to “A’ight? Cool.”

A braided hairstyle is completed so five people leave for the washroom.

“My bottle has the brand Deer on it but the drawing is a giraffe! I love it.”

Slowly planted footsteps of an ancient spell wash over the room’s collective attention.

Beautiful, rainbow, polka-dotted legs created by bruises.

He folded his back in half to the envy of stiff girls and fell asleep in the position.

Pascal created a water puddle from icing an injured foot.

Today’s teacher will offer combinations of quick jumps and turns that will make more than the body dizzy.

A magical lotion concoction is shared to revive deceased muscle cells.

There is competition between each artist that ultimately creates an atmosphere of continuous progress got hard work and creativity without the initial direct comparison of individuals which doesn’t exist anyway since everyone wears different leotards, listens to music differently, and orders different sandwiches for lunch.

Hundred dollar shoes are stomped on and broken, c’est la vie of a dancer.

A colourful, flowing skirt and a pair of cozy, lightweight shorts eye each other across the dance bag, each hoping to be today’s wardrobe choice.

As the clock ticks its time, figures rise from gravity to stand in staggering rows of perfect increments in one identical position, ready to start ballet class.

——————————————-
This was trickier than expected! Under this you will find a list of instructions given by NaPoWriMo to write this poem. It was fun, I just did not have the patience to “de-fragmentize” each statement. Turned out with an entertaining and funny style, I think. Hope you enjoyed!

1. Begin the poem with a metaphor.
2. Say something specific but utterly preposterous.
3. Use at least one image for each of the five senses, either in succession or scattered randomly throughout the poem.
4. Use one example of synesthesia (mixing the senses).
5. Use the proper name of a person and the proper name of a place.
6. Contradict something you said earlier in the poem.
7. Change direction or digress from the last thing you said.
8. Use a word (slang?) you’ve never seen in a poem.
9. Use an example of false cause-effect logic.
10. Use a piece of talk you’ve actually heard (preferably in dialect and/or which you don’t understand).
11. Create a metaphor using the following construction: “The (adjective) (concrete noun) of (abstract noun) . . .”
12. Use an image in such a way as to reverse its usual associative qualities.
13. Make the persona or character in the poem do something he or she could not do in “real life.”
14. Refer to yourself by nickname and in the third person.
15. Write in the future tense, such that part of the poem seems to be a prediction.
16. Modify a noun with an unlikely adjective.
17. Make a declarative assertion that sounds convincing but that finally makes no sense.
18. Use a phrase from a language other than English.
19. Make a non-human object say or do something human (personification).
20. Close the poem with a vivid image that makes no statement, but that “echoes” an image from earlier in the poem.

Japanese Cows (NaPoWriMo #23)

image

You know cows
None tattooed
Yammer and bicker
Caught around cones
Moon ash trickles, gone.

This is the original Japanese poem by Monk Ryokan:

Yo no naka wa
nani ni tatoen
yamabiko no
kotauru koe no
munashiki ga goto

And its translation by Steven D Carter :

Our life in this world –
to what shall I compare it?
Its like an echo
resounding through the mountains
and off into the empty sky.

—————————————-

Wow, the Japanese poem is so beautiful. Languages are so diverse and have different stresses of syllables- in Japanese there are so many k’s, g’s, and y’s compared to English, and that’s after translating pictograms into alphabetical notation. Though the “homophobic translation” prompt focuses on similarities of look and sound and not meaning, I can’t help but wonder how different it is read in Japanese with the original words intact. Sometimes I have the urge to just learn a bunch of foreign languages.

Efficient Couch and Sock Matchmaking (NaPoWriMo #10)

When a seating compromise can’t be made,
One wants the sun, one wants the shade
A wooden bench is uncomfortable, so is the ground
So, on this funky lounge, plop yourselves down!

The age old laundry mystery
With this, will be made history
Just clip the lone one by the cute message
Soon the pair are happily reunited in marriage

These are two creative products I found on Pinterest that were my inspiration for the April 10th prompt to write a poem advertisement. Because if you are going to write an ad, might as well do it for real and for something cool you like! And if you haven’t noticed, I’ve been writing these prompts completely out of order, but I will catch up!

Lovely Alarm (NaPoWriMo #7)

image

Tick, Tock.
Goes any ordinary clock,
But mine is special,
It’s quiet.

Its face glows blue,
A calming hue,
When I cannot see
At night.

Its design is foldable,
Small and holdable,
A hardy companion
Overseas.

No thing is as loyal
To its daily toil,
So I never miss morning sun
Through the trees.

Scratches in clumps
From morning grumps
Accidentally knocking it down
To the floor.

With this it puts up
And several “shut ups”
So what if it doesn’t
Tick tock.

It is my best little alarm clock.

————————————–
I really do love my alarm clock. Except in the mornings. I have been sick and am consequently more motivated to write poetry than homework. Oh dear. I wish creative writing was as big a part of English as essay writing, and not just in Writer’s Craft which I will always regret not being able to take.

Woe of May Flowers

Warm breezes gently breathe, stuck in stuffy nose
Yellow dust of unhatched life surf waves of the air flows
Soaking up the sun and green and reach for a tissue
I love spring, I only wish I didn’t have – achoo!

Inspiration Collage: For a Special Someone

Life is like a camera

Adventure

"days are only as grey as you allow them to be."I really need to see this tonight. Time to start over.

Shel Silverstein

Dedicated to that special Someone: I hope this has spread some sunshine for you and that you know  there are many who are always here for you.

—————————————————————————————————-

All these posts are taken from Pinterest, which unfortunately does not always have the best cited sources. For those that do not recognize his style, the poem on the left is written by Shel Silverstein, one of my favourite authors in elementary school. The new genre of combining images and quotes is a great way to inspire and would be fun to create, I imagine. I love collecting so I can read through them in low times.

Life can be tough, and comfort can be found in this medium. Hope some of these resonated with you the way they did to me.

What Now?

I haven’t been writing much since the end of NaPoWriMo and to be quite honest with you, I don’t know the answer to this question myself. What I do know is that I cannot wait for summer and that I hope to continue writing in at least these ways:

1. Living up to my name
Posts regarding ballet as an art form, experiences of a dancer, and book reviews will return. An amazing week of a dance festival with 18 different ballet schools has left me inspired, and I am also working on reviews for two graphic novels as well as a funny biography.

2. Scholarly Series
Works I’ve written over the past few years in high school will be shared for anyone in the midst of studying Shakespeare, Lord of the Flies, Paradise Lost, literary devices, and things of that sort. Oh, and I just love the word scholar. I thought it a better replacement for the word ‘school’ or ‘student’.

3. A Big Awards Extravaganza!
It is exactly what it sounds like. Just to give you an idea of just how big, it will take at least 4 parts to be completed. I think it is only fair to share the support and generosity that I’ve received; I have many to thank and spotlight, so stay tuned!

4. Life is unexpectedly surprising
Since starting, I’ve realized that I am inspired to write about everyday occurrences and random thoughts as much as from dancing and reading. Each day can be wonderful, stressful, exhilarating, or serene, and I want to capture some of these moments. So some personal stuff will be scattered around. And yes, that heading title was repetitive.

5. Creativity continues
As I’ve said, my first NaPoWriMo was a lot of fun and I will be writing poems, though inconsistently. I love writing short stories but due to limited time, poems are often a more efficient and equally expressive choice. Creative writing is my favourite kind of writing, and I want to do more of it in the near future.

So as I’m rummaging through a box of themes and ideas, I thank you for your interest and patience in the meanderings of this blog. I know the closer we get to the end of the school year, the busier I will be, but I’ll do my best to write a post every few days.

Poetry of Life Rewritten (NapoWriMo #30)

space is beautiful
An opposite adaptation of Poetry of Life by Friedrich von Schiller:

“Who would himself with light reject,
Or simplify his death with darkness that dampens in modesty,
Or neglect true despairs that do but confirm the lie?–
Though with my dream my hell should be appointed–
Though the free-pinioned soul that once could depart
From the small empire of the impossible,
This vacation life with iron wings may release,
Yet thus the inexperience o’er ourselves we lose,
And boisterous treachery to our acts illicit,
Separates us thus tutored in the second of need,
With a more drunk and defiant mind!
How front desire–yet bid thy age
Welcome the mild rule of death’s rash peasant, falsehood.”

So speakest thou, nemesis, how weaker far than I;
As from experience–that indefinite port chaotic–
Thou lookest;–and bent, a warmth unwraps the sky,
The winter depression flourishes from the scene,
Encouraged by the frivolous spell; behold them fly,
The godlike images that seemed so ugly!
Noisy the serious Muse–the pale hours
Continue in their dance; and the May-breathless flowers
Ascend from the sister-graces’ still hair.
Foul-mouthed Apollo mends his golden lyre,
Hermes, the wand with expectation scarce;–
The veil, olive-woven, by the old desire
With dreams, drops from the vibrant cheeks of death.
The world seems what it is–a happy! and hatred
Lifts up the bondage wound his eyes below,
And sees!–He sees but tangible clay
Where he dreamed devils; and gasps–and plods away.
The oldness of the grotesque grows young,
And on thy lips the bride’s morbid kiss seems scorching;
And in the dispersal of sadness–upon thy stool
Thou standest in state, and meltest into air.

——————————————————————————–
I’ve finally written the last poem. I can’t believe how fast the month has passed and am now proud to say I’ve completed my first NaPoWriMo challenge attempt (sort of, since it wasn’t EXACTLY a poem a day). It’s been fun and I’m sad to announce its end. Congrats to all who participated and thank you for joining me this April 2013.

Meek (NaPoWriMo #29) *plus* an optional quiz

.A woman’s heart is a deep ocean of secrets.

The albinos sit  huddled together in the cafeteria
Picking at bits of rice drowned again since the paddies
In shy angst, they watch plates topped with hamburgers pass
As owners chow down on ketchup dipped fries
In quiet murmurs they sip fruit juice at their table
Watching with curious eyes, but no words.
———————————————————————————-

THE QUIZ:
In each line except the last, there is at least one “loan word” used in the English language that originates from another country. See if you can match a word to each of these languages and post your answer in the comments below!
Chinese, French, German, Bahasa (Indonesian), Spanish

———————————————————————————
So it’s a bit of a variation on the prompt, but that’s alright, I think. This one was inspired by the group of young dancers from Denmark who are very sweet but extremely shy. They are a wonderful addition to the international cast of the dance festival, and are dearly loved by everyone. So this one’s for the Bournonville dancers!

PS: I know I am late on this NapoWriMo business, but I’m doing my best to finish it ASAP with the time that I have.
